Along with legendary designer and iconoclast Elsa Schiaparelli, Miuccia Prada will show in a joint retrospective at The Met’s Spring 2012 Costume Institute exhibition, Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations. The exhibition features orchestrated conversations between these iconic Italian designers to suggest new readings of their most innovative work. Art director, video director and artist, Nagi Noda, produced this series of exquisitely executed ‘hair hats’ before her untimely death in 2008. Nagi Noda was active not only in the realms of Japanese advertising and graphic design, but also in fashion and art, the scope of her creativity reaching way beyond Japan’s shores.

Photographer Justin Violini frames intimate moments of youthful men in his new book The Greater Part of a Year, a collective of beautifully shot documentary style portraits from 2011. Originally inspired by a series of fashion photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith, these portraits seamlessly blend together, creating a dynamic effect between camera and model. They were shot with 35mm, digital, and 120mm cameras in Bushwick, Brooklyn and The Bowery, New York. Preview the book here, which will be in limited print this November.

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles presents Hedi Slimane‘s California Song. The collection of work centers around the photographer’s ‘California period’ in which he explored urban youth culture and artistic communities. Slimane’s first West Coast show is divided into two parts: a series of black-and-white print photographs on the ground floor and a motion-photography installation, created specifically for the MOCA, on the second floor. The show runs from November 12 – January 22 at the MOCA Pacific Design Center.
